East Brigden

Early Brigden Industry: photograph of East Brigden Mill, taken around 1900, gives an idea of the number of employees engaged in the manufacture of barrel staves.

The major feature of East Brigden was the East Brigden Mill, originally called Chamberlain Mill.  It was well known for the manufacture of barrel staves, used primarily in the oil and rum industries.  The factory was located at the top of the hill before the gully of Bear Creek along Waterworks Road, along the Canada Southern Railway line.

Barrel Stave Shop: Interior scene of the Brigden mill shows the equalizer saw (at right) for putting flat surfaces on logs and the barrel stave machine (at left). Note that the dangerous-looking 24-inch equalizer saw was operated without a guard and that none of the employees wore goggles.
