Ossian was named for the poet to whom Scottish poet James Macpherson (1736 – 1796) gave credit for providing word-of-mouth testimony about ancient Gaelic people and events. Ossian’s post office opened on March 1, 1859 on Lot. 1, Con. 8 Moore and closed in 1913. Today, Franz Turkey Farms are a well-known landmark in the area of Ossian. The Postil Cemetery is also located near the hamlet.
